Bookmaking Workshop
with Janet Parker-Smith
Learn the processes of bookmaking to create blank journals/sketchbooks and also create an artist book with your own prints and drawings.
During this course, learn skills in how to make handmade books including a
*japanese bound book;
*single signature soft bound book;
*concertina artist book of your artwork;
*coptic bind hard cover journal.
Over the course of the 2 days students will acquire skills in book-binding and learn 3 different types of binds. Using existing prints, textured papers or plain drawing papers you can create your own journals and artist books. Participants will curate their own prints into a concertina book. You may also work on a self-directed artwork from an existing book using processes to create a deconstructed/altered artist book.Through the process of experimentation students will also be able to explore the processes of folds, cutting and construction to create an artist book from an existing book.
Students will need to bring at least 1 book that they can deconstruct/alter (a hard cover book if preferable), their own prints/drawings for concertina book and for covers, and art paper for journals. Some cartridge/art papers and copy paper will be included, but participants often like to make books with specialty papers for watercolour or sketching.
Learn binding methods to develop your next entry in next year's Manly MAGAM artist book award.
